The Road Safety Teen Driver Audio Monitor is a hi-tech and yet economical way to monitor your teenager's driving. It has been extensively tested with teen drivers from 15 to 19 years old. Without exception, significant improvement in driving performance is seen almost immediately -- just like when you're sitting next to your teen as they drive! So, how does this "black box" (much like a "black box" flight data recorder used in commercial aircraft) improve teenage driver performance?

It monitors how your teenager drives on a second by second basis. Any time the vehicle is operated in an unsafe manner, such as driving at high speeds, "pedal-to-the-metal" throttle use, performing high g-force maneuvers (hard cornering, etc.), etc., the "black box" gives the driver an audible warning alert. If the driver ignores the warning and fails to take corrective action, a steady tone will sound until the unsafe condition is stopped. All unsafe driving is recorded in the driver scoring reports available for review when the "black box" data is downloaded to a PC computer. In addition, their driving is now being graded against a performance standard and reported to you, their parents.

Here are some of your concerns and how this product addresses them:

SPEEDING

In teen driver vehicle crashes that involve serious injury or death, excessive speed is almost always a factor. Our ambulance and fire department first responders continuously tell us about this tragic and needless loss of life that would not have occurred had excessive speed not been present. For most parents, one of their biggest fears is the telephone call or the knock on the door late at night by a police officer telling them that their teenager will not be coming home. The Audio Monitor constantly monitors vehicle speed. In-vehicle audio warning for speeding absolutely changes behavior and stops this tremendously unsafe driving practice.

AGGRESSIVE DRIVING

Hard braking usually indicates driver distractions causing late reactions or driving too fast for the road or conditions. "Jack-rabbit" take offs from the light and high speed cornering are aggressive behaviors commonly found in teenage drivers. This type of driving significantly increases the risk of a vehicle crash. Add to that the feeling of invincibility that most teenagers have and the attitude that "it won't happen to me" and you have a recipe for disaster. Our Audio Monitor uses an accelerometer designed for automotive testing to detect high g-forces on the vehicle that are created by this type of aggressive driving. As g-forces become excessive, an audio warning is immediately given to the driver to back-off. The only way to avoid hearing the audio warning (and the embarrassment if friends are in the vehicle) is to drive safely.

You have control !

As frequently as you like, simply pop the memory card out of the "black box" and plug it into your family computer to display the reports and graphs. Review them with your teenager and let them know that you care how they operate the vehicle - no speeding, no aggressive driving - just like being in the car with them every second they drive. For all of us, driving a car is a privilege -- it is not a right. This system lets your teenager know that they can continue to enjoy that privilege so long as they drive safely. I know what many of you are going to say -- "my son or daughter is a good kid -- honor student, athlete, goes to church, hangs with the right kids, etc. etc. I know they drive safely when I am not with them." Think again. We have collected thousands of hours of base-line data covering thousands of miles of teenage driving. Trust me when I say that you would be shocked to see how fast and how aggressively teenagers drive when you are not in the car with them. If you knew, you would take the keys to the car and throw them away forever.

The product can be installed by anyone by simply plugging the on-board computer into the vehicle Data Link Connector on 1996 and newer vehicles. Pre-1996 vehicles will require installation by a qualified automotive technician such as an car stereo/ car alarm installer. Complete, easy-to-follow instructions are supplied.

The RS-1000 On-Board Computer is installed by simply plugging the supplied cable into the CAN or OBD II Data Link Connector. The Data Link Connector (DLC) is factory installed on all 1996 and newer vehicles sold in the United States and Canada. The connector is generally located under the dash near the steering wheel. To determine the location of the DLC connector in your vehicle, please click here.

Some vehicles do not fully implement the signals necessary for the RS-1000 to function properly. This may be the result of a faulty vehicle system or sensor, or a non-compliant vehicle CAN or OBD II protocol. Note the following vehicles will NOT work with the RS-1000:

1. Electric & Hybrid Vehicles - These vehicles generally are not supported and may not implement CAN nor OBD II protocols.

2. 1997 Ford Explorer, Ranger & Mazda Vehicles - Some 1997 Ford Explorers and Rangers with Mazda 4.0L engines and 1997 Mazdas with 4.0L engines do not report vehicle speed in the OBD II protocol. The RS-1000 will show all data and run information normally but will not display speed information in the graphs or reports.

3. 1996 Mercedes Benz "C" Class - Plugging any device into the OBD-II Data Link Connector may cause the vehicle to enter the diagnostic mode and illuminate the "Check Engine" light.

For 1996 and earlier vehicles, the RS-1000 can be "hard-wired" if it has an electronic speed sensor. Technical support, documentation or answering of any technical questions is NOT available for "hard-wire" installations. These installations should only be performed by qualified automotive technicians and can be quite expensive. They also require the purchase of a "hard-wire" harness. The only documentation provided with the "hard-wire" harness is the function and color of each wire in the harness. It is up to the qualified automotive technician to determine the proper vehicle installation and connection point for each wire. Note that the manufacturer assumes no responsibility for incorrect "hard-wire" installations.

Vehicles manufactured for sale outside of the United States and Canada Vehicles manufactured for sale outside of the United States and Canada may or may not have a compatible DLC connector. The RS-1000 may or may not work with these vehicles. Please verify that your vehicle is compatible with the OBD II or CAN standard. We do not provide refunds on units purchased for shipment outside of the United States.
